The UX Foundations team at The New York Times is looking for an Android Engineer. In this role, you will work with our Native squad to lay the foundations for satisfying native app experiences that give our readers access to our world-class journalism in a medium that is responsive and personal. You will work with designers, other Android and iOS engineers, web engineers, and more on a cross-functional team with experience supporting remote work. This is an opportunity to use a wide variety of tools, ranging from Kotlin and Jetpack Compose to hybrid web technologies - whatever will best solve the problem at hand. You’ll be part of an engineering organization that values transparency and openness, diversity, learning, community, and continuous improvement.

You’ll be an ideal candidate if you:
  • Have experience building sophisticated app experiences using Kotlin. 
  • Understand Android design patterns, memory management, and multi-threading.
  • Have worked with GraphQL APIs and the engineers who build them.
  • Have a growth mindset: you embrace challenges, learn from mistakes, and are always learning.
  • Are excited about The New York Times, and share our mission to help people understand the world.

Desired experience:
  • 3+ years software development experience working with Android
  • Experience working with Agile software development methodologies
  • Experience writing unit and UI tests
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

This role will require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.
